According to the AJC, drivers are no longer able to operate their phones unless they are using hands-free technology. This is due to the new Hands-Free Georgia Act, which took effect July 1st. more Previously, only teenagers under the age of 18 were prohibited from using a wireless device while driving. This change is due to the starling spike of deaths related to texting and driving. The AJC estimates that “at least 3,000 people die each year in accidents nationally caused by distracted driving”. Additionally, from 2014-2016 Georgia saw a 34% increase in motor vehicle deaths. Under this new legislation, if a device is your hand, you are breaking the law despite age.
