The two-wheel drive Ranger came out mid-1982, while the four-wheel-drive version was released in fall. As you might expect in an older model, the horsepower and torque of the Ford Ranger weren’t much to look at by today’s standards. It had a 2.3L 4cyl engine that gave 80 horsepower. There were 4 trims for this pickup truck; base, XL, XLS, and XLT. If you had driven a Ford Ranger back then, you’d only have 2 options for wheelbase and bed; a 108-inch wheelbase truck with a 6-foot bed, or a 114-inch wheelbase truck that had a 7-foot bed. There were actually three transmission options; the standard was a 4-speed manual transmission. The other two optional transmissions were a 5-speed manual or a 3-speed automatic. The 1983 4x4 Ford Ranger could haul 1,600 pounds, which actually wasn’t too shabby.
